Anton, To Terra

Sometimes, we tend to get a little crazy in here. As you may already know, Poni Republic seeks pop through all sorts of art, initiatives and sounds. We truly believe there are pop references everywhere and actually, finding them, is one of our favorite sports. Although Anton in this particular case was the one who found us, we consider these spontaneous mutual discoveries THE true objective of this so-called netlabel game, thus we’re more than happy to introduce you once again, to one of the most fucked up releases we’ve ever hosted.

To Terra, lies somewhere between the atmospheres of the earliest Richard D. James’ work and the forever-yummy atmospheres, textures and bipolarity of the legendary roster of Rephlex Records. Do any of you remember Bogdan Raczynski or Cylobotnia? Well we do, as a matter of fact, we always do, a little bit too much, to be sincere. However, this release is also “a compilation of tracks put together as a vessel for adventures, experiences, memories, and best friends. Enjoy” so says Anton Vegel, the guy behind this scene.

E.lebleu: You, Me & The Werewolves

Four years can really make a difference. In 2005, Eric Gamboa delivered through Soundsister Two Years Off, a delicate, ethereal ambient folk album based on electroacustic experimentation, field recordings and noisy, warm introspection. But something changed. Gamboa is in a different place now, and with You, Me and The Werewolves (Poni Republic, 2009) he has a new goal: to make you dance!

In only 6 songs, this EP really gets diverse, taking elements from the wide dance territory, like techno/house/minimal/hiphop-ish beats, chopped vocal samples, wobbling basses, moving synths, clicks'n'cuts, you name it. The only vocals are provided by Poni fellow Nuuro, on the track "The Mothman", which sounds like a late-night England. This isn't the only collaboration: Mexican friend Rugoso adds flavor to "Polynesian Rush", while Gamboa wrestles with laptop artist Plug on a pretty fun, upbeat, live versus called "Pony Ride". Damn, I'm already tapping my toes.

This new E.lebleu release deserves at least a listen, but I recommend 2 or 3, just to have those beats burnt into your brain. So, who knows? If at first he took two years off, then four, then maybe in six years we'll get a grind / hardcore punk album or something like that. We'll wait and see.

Nuuro, Paper Heart EP

We met Alejandro Ghersi when he used to be a 16 year old indietronic emo kid from Venezuela. He was too shy to sing on his own, he wouldn't even dare to play a guitar alone, yet, he kept trying until the point he found himself in New York City, living on his own, with one LP recorded, various songs in respected compilations such as annual Darla's "secrets", and more recently, two EPs.

This is the latter, and it's his deepest, most mature, and heartbreaking work so far. Downtempo, vocoders and deep atmospheres that become the menu of a banquet to which all can access, but only a few will be fortunate to be pleased with. A five-piece EP that will remain as one of Ghersi's cult jewels from here to a very long time.

Nuuro, All Clear

Alejandro Ghersi is a 16 year old wiz-kid from Venezuela that might as well represent what young kids have been waiting for. Cute, yet intelligent, electronic pop well structured songs, sung by a stunning voice that will shock older audiences too.

He's not 80's influenced, but he sure knows how to sing and make any song sound beautiful, like back in the days. For some reason, he makes us think of Morrissey or Ben Gibbard singing over beats done by Psapp, Mu-ziq or Yellotone.

Youthful and sophisticated electronic glitchery crafted for melancholic pop songs about high school passion and loss. Far from being naive, Venezuela's new poster boy writes downhearted stories meant for nostalgic souls.

Nuuro previously released In Transit EP in (2005) and has already featured an exclusive track on Little Darla Has a Treat for You v.24 (Darla) compilation this summer. All Clear is our first physical release through Soundsister Records and you can already order it at Darla and Juno.

Silver St., Time Will Heal

Seamlessly drawn together, Time Will Heal is a short record which documents beautiful tracks that drift into one another with surprising ease, drawing out exotic ciphered rhythms and patterns that sound foreign no matter where you are.

Mostly popular for his acclaimed soothing micro-house Relief album as Transistor, mexican producer Edgar Medina locked himself away from those foot-stomping days and started using his laptop like Dustin Huffman did in Rain Man with his typewriter, only Edgar was seeking new horizons, new textures, cutesy giggly ambient sounds.

Silver St.'s characteristic trait is his use of sharp dry naive synthesizers that punctuate the careful melodies in the backdrop of rinsing pads and calculated whirrs in such a manner that crash into one piece, not only entrancing but, oddly hurtful and romantic.

Nuuro, In Transit EP

Alex already controls his computer like an adult, but he is not even allowed to buy beer in his country yet. How ironic, huh? But don't let that stop you, because he's not just quite another nerd.

Besides the fact he's from Caracas, Venezuela, and sure knows how to make people dance, his cut-rhythm style and programming skills are just wonderful. In Transit is the sound of south american youth's folklore, flirting with electronic pop and experimental music.

Gloom, Mutatis Mutandi

We were one of those who actually thought the 90's glitchy and drilled sound was never going to be nicely produced in Mexico. But it wasn't until, 24-year-old, Juan, appeared at our house a few days ago, and introduced us his alter-ego: Gloom. This smart ass, yet humble genius, definitely proved us wrong.

Though, he is better known as Bifidus; a Filtro Netlabel dub-guided techno project, recently available at their website. Nobody had heard of him before Bifidus, some say the guy was lonely, and probably locked inside his home studio, producing dubby techno, while listening to old Autechre and Squarepusher records with nostalgia. No wonder his music is so good.

Yeah, you got it. It's IDM, the good kind, like back in the day.
