Elaine, De verdad, de verdad quiero que te mueras

Venezuelan trio Elaine finally deliver their debut album, "De verdad, de verdad quiero que te mueras", and one thing's for sure: This album will make you both mosh and dance.

The songs are built in the key of punk rock, but they feed from different styles, like indie rock, surf/rockabilly, hardcore, Latin music, ska, and many more. You won't get bored, I promise. Recorded live almost in its entirety, "De verdad..." transport you to an Elaine show, with a sonic palette enhanced by audio effects and diginoise. The album gives you little time to breath, so the adrenalin remains on its peak for almost 30 minutes.

"De verdad..." is filled with angry, sexy and pessimistic lyrics, raging screams, poppy harmonies, inside jokes and the occasional animal noises. You may or may not already know the killer combo of "Yes Louis", "Over It (Not)" and "Like It Naked", featured on the "Desnuditos" EP (The Poni Republic, 2009), which showcased perfectly the essence of the band, and remain the best songs on this record.

"Verushka" is a dark wave-ish tune with a little joke via Korn. With a Batman theme-like intro, "Horrorpunk" mocks the whole vampiresque pose, or maybe an specific someone. "Take it away" is the slowest number on the album, and is as anthemic as any song by Against Me!, for example. And there are 4 (almost) instrumental pieces, completely welcomed. Sleater-Kinney, NOFX, Ramones, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Siouxie... You can taste them all blended in these 12 songs, but with a twist.

Sadly, Elaine called it quits earlier this year. Luckily, we have this release to remember their fun existence.

Elaine, Desnuditos EP

Cuando conocí a IL Gimón, no fue en una tocada, ni a través de MySpace. Es más, IL es un gran tipo que vive en Caracas, y aún así, lo conocí de la nada; en la esquina, no de mi casa, sino de mis padres. Ambos visitábamos Guadalajara. Él había venido a ver a Los Campesinos! y yo a No Age.

Ese fin de semana, hicimos muchas cosas, pero lo que a la fecha no he olvidado, es el momento en que Jeka de Hey Chica!, Cheky de Jóvenes y Sexys, IL, y yo, íbamos en el auto rockeando con el legendario "Punk-O-Rama Vol. 2" de la Epitaph, mientras mi –en ese entonces– novia, hacía muecas.

Después de eso, no se dijo mucho hasta que IL regresó a Venezuela, y yo al D.F. donde más tarde me volaron los oídos unas tal Elaine, oriundas de Caracas. Supuse que IL sabría de ellas, pero antes de preguntarle verifiqué los nombres de las chicas en su MySpace, y curiosamente, IL Gimón, era el único "marico" de la banda.

WTF?

"Lya y Shere comenzaron en 2006. Yo entré porque Shere me dijo que tenía una banda como Yeah Yeah Yeahs con un poco de Sleater Kinney. Me atrajo muchísimo esa idea, y luego intentamos componer disco punk, pero algo salió mal en el camino. Todo se volvió más caótico y sabrosón, algo así como merengue para shitgazers. Al principio no era tan fiestero, queríamos mantener una atmósfera punky, pero vivir en el trópico no nos perdonó y así salieron estos temas ruidosos."

Noise Beat Propaganda, We're in Love, Yeah Right! EP

“She was, she was, she was in my bed / Jizz, jizz, jizz in my pants!”… Así, sin pudor alguno y en pleno rush de cafeína, comienza esta ráfaga dance punk labrada en la siempre dominical y plana ciudad de Mexicali, donde además de riquísima comida china, cerveza Tecate y almas en pena por La Rumorosa, también pululan bandas llenas de energía y actitud admirable como es el caso de Noise Beat Propaganda, una de nuestras bandas propuesta para este año, donde por cierto, canta la hermana de uno de los chicos de Maniquí Lazer. Así que si son aficionados de ese característico espíritu punk norteño, que tanto nos gusta aquí en la redacción, “Sexy Neon Wine” pronto se volverá uno de los nuevos sencillos más populares de sus iPods.
